One thing I love about Morrowind that absolutely could and should have a place in modern games but inexplicable doesn't is the hyperlink system in dialogue boxes and the journal. I still want to give Morrowind another try, but am not sure whether to continue my previous attempt (I'll probably have to look up a guide to get through the quest I'm on now, which is something I always try to avoid) or restart with a new character. I just finished an Oblivion playthrough yesterday (my first since the PS3). I feel like the loot systems are the best in the series, as items don't level up with your character (so you can get the best stuff in the game at level 1 if you're lucky enough) and there are a lot more unique items/dungeons than either Oblivion or Skyrim. It requires you to explore on your own which can be a lot more rewarding. All that being said, I can definitely see why many fans love it. Tried coming back to it a few months later, but it was even harder to try to pick back up where I left off. I played about ~25 hours before getting frustrated on a Thieves Guild quest in some labyrinth of a multi-leveled city and putting the game down for a while. I was prepared for most of this going in. Same goes for lockpicking and persuasion. Instead, every attack generates a random number that is put against an equation composed of some combination of your skills, attributes, and fatigue and that determines whether or not you even hit your opponent or your spell gets cast at all. Combat is pretty awful, as there's very little skill that goes into it. Even worse, running (which is way slower than in Oblivion) drains fatigue.

As somebody mentioned, there aren't any waypoints or map-markers or fast-travel (from the map, at least). It's definitely jarring coming from Oblivion/Skyrim, as it's a lot less user-friendly.

I only modded it lightly (mainly for bug fixes and to play in full HD in a native wide-screen resolution). My first real experience with Morrowind came at the beginning of the pandemic.

I also built my first PC to play Skyrim in 2014. I bought Oblivion when I first got my PS3 and loved it.
